Garage Door Insulation

Colorado Springs Garage Door Insulation Services

Most homeowners never think about their garage door when they want to cut energy costs. They check the windows. They add attic insulation. Meanwhile, the largest opening in the house, often uninsulated, often poorly sealed, sits there cycling cold air in all winter and heat all summer.

Awesome Home Services installs insulated garage doors throughout the Colorado Springs area. If your current door is older or single-layer, there is a good chance it is costing you more than you realize.

Upgrade to a stronger, more efficient insulated garage door. Call (719) 800-7121 or reach out online to schedule service.

What Is Garage Door Insulation?

A standard garage door is built from one or two layers of steel. It keeps weather and intruders out, but steel on its own does very little to slow the transfer of heat or cold. On a January morning in Colorado Springs, a single-layer steel door is essentially a large, cold surface sitting at the edge of your garage.

An insulated garage door adds a layer of foam material between or behind those steel panels. That foam creates a thermal barrier, slowing the rate at which outside temperatures move through the door and into your garage. An insulated door holds a more stable temperature, is structurally stronger, and makes your home easier and less expensive to heat and cool.

Two Ways to Insulate Your Garage Door

When it comes to garage door insulation, you have two options depending on the condition and age of your existing door.

Replacing with a purpose-built insulated door

Doors manufactured with insulation built in, particularly those with injected polyurethane foam, tend to outperform retrofit solutions. The insulation is bonded to the steel panels during manufacturing, which eliminates the edge gaps that retrofit kits can leave behind. The door is also structurally designed to carry the added material, which avoids the spring and opener strain that DIY insulation kits can create.

Retrofitting an existing door

If your current door is structurally sound and relatively recent, adding insulation to it is an option. A retrofit involves installing foam insulation panels into the door's existing frame sections. Done correctly, it improves the door's thermal performance without requiring a full replacement. Retrofit insulation works best when the door is in good mechanical condition, fits its frame well, and has weatherstripping that is still doing its job.

When you call Awesome Home Services, we look at your existing door honestly and tell you which path makes more sense for your situation. If a retrofit is the right call, we will say so. If the door is past the point where adding insulation will make a meaningful difference, we will tell you that too. The goal is to give you the best outcome for your home, not to sell you the more expensive option!

Why Garage Insulation Is Important in Colorado

Garage door insulation matters everywhere, but it matters more here for a few reasons:

  • The first is the temperature range. Colorado Springs can sit below zero in January and push 90 degrees in July. That is a swing of close to 90 degrees between seasonal extremes, and the daily swings within those seasons can be nearly as dramatic. Many states do not deal with that kind of range, and most garage doors are not built with it in mind.
  • The second is altitude. Colorado Springs sits at roughly 6,000 feet above sea level. At that elevation, the air is thinner and drier, which means it loses heat faster than air at sea level. Homes here have higher heating demands than the same house would in a lower-elevation climate, and that puts more pressure on every part of the building, including the garage door.
  • The third is weather. Hailstorms, high winds, and hard freezes are regular occurrences along the Front Range. These conditions accelerate wear on seals and weatherstripping, which are the parts of the system that do as much work as the insulation itself. A door that held a decent seal five years ago may not be performing the same way today.

How Insulation Affects the Performance of Your HVAC System

Your heating and cooling system works to maintain a target temperature inside your home. Every time outside air gets in, the system has to run longer to compensate.

For homes with attached garages, an uninsulated door is one of the more significant ways outside air influences the inside of the house. The garage shares walls, a ceiling, and sometimes a floor with adjacent living spaces. Cold air that enters through the door does not stay in the garage. It moves through those shared surfaces into the rooms next to it and above it.

An insulated door reduces how much outside air influences the garage temperature. A more stable garage means less cold bleeding through shared walls. Less cold bleeding through shared walls means your furnace runs fewer cycles to hold the temperature you set. Over the course of a Colorado heating season, which runs from roughly October through April, those cycles add up on your gas bill.

The same applies in summer. A cooler garage reduces the heat load on rooms adjacent to it, which takes pressure off your air conditioner.

Attached Garages vs. Detached Garages

The impact of garage door insulation depends significantly on how your garage is connected to your home.

Attached garages share structural surfaces with your living space. The door is part of a connected thermal envelope, which means what happens in the garage directly influences the comfort and energy use of the rooms around it. For attached garages, insulation is one of the more practical upgrades a homeowner can make. The benefits are felt in the rooms next to the garage, in the HVAC system's workload, and in the door's ability to hold up over time.

Detached garages are a different situation. Because the garage does not share surfaces with the house, an insulated door will not have the same effect on your home's energy bills. The benefit is more localized: the garage itself will hold a more stable temperature, which matters if you use it as a workshop, a gym, or a space where you spend meaningful time.

When you call us for an estimate, we will tell you honestly which situation you are in and what kind of difference an insulated door is likely to make.

Understanding Insulation for Garage Doors: What Is R-Value?

R-value is a measure of resistance. Specifically, it measures how hard a material works to slow heat from moving through it. Think of it like a jacket. A thin rain jacket has a low R-value: it keeps rain out but does not do much against the cold. A heavy winter coat has a high R-value: it actively holds heat in. The higher the R-value, the better the door resists temperature transfer.

For context:

  • R-6 to R-9 - Basic insulation. Better than a single-layer door, but limited for Colorado's winters.
  • R-10 to R-13 - A solid middle range. Appropriate for most attached garages and a meaningful improvement over an uninsulated door.
  • R-16 and above - Recommended for garages that connect directly to living space, homes with rooms above the garage, or garages used as a year-round workspace.

One important caveat: R-value measures the insulation panel itself, not the whole door. A door's overall performance also depends on the quality of its seals, how well it fits the frame, and whether there are gaps at the edges or threshold. A door rated R-16 with deteriorated weatherstripping will underperform a well-sealed door rated R-12. We look at the full picture, not just the spec sheet number.

Choosing the Right Door for Your Home

The two most common insulation materials are polystyrene and polyurethane.

  • Polystyrene uses rigid foam panels inserted between the door's steel layers. It performs well and is standard on most mid-range insulated doors.
  • Polyurethane is injected as a liquid foam and expands to fill the entire panel interior, bonding to both steel walls. It eliminates edge gaps, adds structural rigidity, and tends to deliver better performance at the same thickness.

Our team walks you through the options clearly and helps you find a door that fits your home, your garage configuration, and your budget.

How to Tell If Your Door Needs Replacing

A few signs are worth paying attention to:

  • The garage gets noticeably cold in winter or hot in summer with the door closed
  • A room above or next to the garage is harder to keep comfortable than the rest of the house
  • You can see daylight around the edges of the door when it is shut
  • The door is a single-layer steel panel with no insulation
  • The door is more than 15 to 20 years old and has never been replaced

Single-layer steel doors, common in homes built before the late 1990s, have essentially no insulation value. If yours has never been replaced, it is worth having it assessed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can insulation be added to my existing garage door?

DIY insulation kits can add some thermal resistance to a single-layer door, but they typically fall short of a purpose-built insulated door and can add weight the springs and opener were not designed to handle. If your existing door is in good shape, we will tell you honestly whether improving the seals makes more sense than a full replacement.

How much does a new insulated garage door cost?

It depends on door size, insulation type, material, and style. A standard single-car insulated steel door with polyurethane foam typically starts around $700 to $1,200 for the door itself, with installation costs on top. Two-car doors and premium configurations run higher. We provide free estimates so you have a complete picture before making any decision. Financing is available through GoodLeap for qualifying customers.

How long does installation take?

Most single or double-car door installations can be completed within a day. If additional prep work is needed, we will let you know upfront so there are no surprises.
