Your Garage Door Keeps Reversing Before It Closes? Here’s Why.

If your garage door reverses before it reaches the ground, you might suspect that there’s an issue with the opener. However, that’s most likely not where the problem is. Typically, I see a reversing garage door trace back to one of three causes, and two of them can be diagnosed in about five minutes without a service call.

I’m Cedric H., the Garage Door Operations Manager at Awesome Home Services. I’ve worked through reversing garage door issues dozens of times. The pattern in this problem is consistent enough that I can tell you where to start trying to fix it on your own. In this blog, I’ll walk you through the three most likely causes in the order you should check them.

What’s Happening When a Garage Door Reverses?

The auto-reverse feature on your garage door is a safety mechanism. It activates when the door’s sensors detect an obstruction in the path or when the opener senses the door is getting more resistance than it should.

A reversing garage door is working as it’s designed. However, if it’s reversing with no apparent safety-related cause, that’s when it’s time to troubleshoot.

The three most common causes of this problem include a safety sensor issue, an incorrectly set travel limit, and mechanical resistance. Below, I’ll walk you through each in the order I’d check them on a service call.

Start Here: Check the Safety Sensors

The photoelectric sensors sit about four to six inches off the ground on each side of the door opening. One sensor sends an infrared beam that the other receives. Any interruption to that beam causes the door to reverse.

Most sensors have indicator lights that tell you their status. Usually, the sending sensor has a yellow or amber light that stays steady. The receiving sensor is typically green and should also stay steady. A blinking light on either sensor means the beam is interrupted.

To determine whether the sensor is causing the door reversal, check if:

  • Anything is crossing the sensor path. If so, remove any obstructions.
  • The sensor lenses are dirty. If so, wipe them with a dry cloth.
  • The sensors are aimed directly at each other. If so, loosen the wing nut on the sensor bracket, adjust the sensor angle until the lights stay steady, and tighten the nut.

If the Sensors Are Fine: Check the Travel Limits

Travel limits specify how far the door should move in each direction. The “close” or “down” limit tells the opener when the door should reach the floor. The door won’t close completely if that limit is too short. It’ll read the floor contact as resistance and reverse.

It’s likely you have a travel limit issue if your garage door consistently reverses at the same height above the ground.

To adjust the limit, you would need to turn a small “Down Limit” or “Close Limit” screw on the motor unit. When adjusting, make a half-turn at a time and test the door after each turn. Avoid overcorrecting.

Note that if your door contacts the floor and reverses, the reversal is likely a sensitivity issue.

When the Door Is Meeting Real Resistance

You’ve checked the sensors and the travel limits, but the door is still reversing? Your door is likely having a resistance issue, where closing it requires more effort than it should. The opener’s force sensor detects when the door takes more energy than its calibrated threshold. A mechanical issue that makes the door heavy or inconsistent causes a reversal.

Signs alongside that reversal include:

  • Shaking or jerking door during travel
  • Grinding or squealing noises
  • Uneven or slow movement

To test if your door has a resistance issue, you’ll need to disconnect the opener. Pull the red cord hanging from the trolley on the drive rail to put the door in manual mode. Then, try moving the door by hand. A door without mechanical issues will move smoothly with light pressure. But a door that drags, sticks, or requires real force to move has a mechanical problem.

Causes of mechanical issues include:

  • Rollers that have worn flat and create drag in the track
  • A track that’s bent or has debris in the channel
  • A door that comes slightly out of alignment

Another likely cause of resistance is a failing torsion spring. The springs counterbalance the door's weight, allowing the opener to move it with minimal force. However, if the spring fails, the door gets heavier on one side, preventing it from moving evenly when you test it manually.

Fixing a torsion spring issue is not a DIY project. These springs are under significant tension, and the job is best left to a technician with the tools and experience to replace them safely and correctly.

When to Call a Technician

If you’ve worked through all three troubleshooting tips above and your door is still reversing, call us.

The same applies if:

  • The door drops lower on one side when it moves
  • You hear grinding, popping, or squealing that wasn’t there before
  • The cables look slack, frayed, or have slipped off the drums
  • The reversal started right after you heard a loud pop or bang

The last one usually means a broken spring. Stop using the door after that sound.
